Essex Covid: The towns with infection rates above 1,000 this time last week – but not anymore – Essex Live

Infection rates in six Essex areas have finally dropped below 1,000.

Since December, the county was branded the epicentre of the coronavirus crisis in England as infection rates soared through our villages and towns.

However, rates are starting to decrease with some of the biggest week-on-week reductions in the whole country.

The latest government data shows infection rates in six local authorities in Essex have significantly dropped in the space of a week from more than 1,000 to less than that figure.

Epping Forest recorded the biggest drop with the infection rate halving in size from 1,170.9 cases per 100,000 in the seven days up to January 7 to 588.5 cases in the week up to January 14.

Basildon also saw infection rates nearly halve in the same seven days from 1,080.1 to 583.9.

Similarly, Harlow, Tendring, Castle Point and Thurrock all saw infection rates drop from over 1,000 to around the 800/900 mark – a sign of cases beginning to drop.
